Learn how printing methods affect durability, ribbon use and label choice.

Product materials related to Direct Thermal vs Thermal Transfer Labels: Which Is Right for You?

How direct thermal works

Direct thermal printers apply heat to specially coated, heat-sensitive labels. The image appears without a transfer ribbon. These labels can be suitable for shipping and other applications where long-term resistance is not the main priority.

How thermal transfer works

Thermal transfer printers heat a ribbon to transfer ink onto a compatible label. With the appropriate ribbon and media combination, this method can provide stronger resistance to smudging, handling and some environmental exposure.

What to verify before buying

Check whether your printer supports direct thermal, thermal transfer or both. Confirm individual label dimensions, roll width, sensor type, core size and roll diameter. Material and ribbon compatibility should be verified for each printer and application.
